Indian Arrival 2012 at VBHC

Vishnu Boys Hindu College recently celebrated Indian Arrival Day at the school with lots of rich culture reflective of what our ancestors brought with them to the shores of Trinidad and Tobago. Certainly, a vast number of the culture and traditions live on, but there are a few which have been slowly slipping away. The Art of Rangoli is one such dying art form. For the last 20 years or so, a beautifully decorated rangoli bedi could have only been seen in a Hindu Wedding. The everyday puja bedi is decorated with flour!!! The purpose of rangoli on the bedi is to make the bedi so beautiful that the Gods and Goddesses will be pleased when they take their seat there. Hence the reason for the Rangoli project.... The selected groups chose from the themes of Surya, Ganesh, Devi, Shiva and Krishna. They were given 2. 5 hours to decorate a two-tier bedi based on the theme they chose. I must say the judges, Ms Shalini Seereeram and Mrs Geeta, the VBHC Administration, the staff, the student body were ALL IMPRESSED at your level of work. Indeed, it was a wonderful Rangoli Unit...... Congratulations Rangoli Artsits of VBHC!!! You did us proud.... Feel free to share your comments and samples pics of the rangoli art work done by the students can be seen below....

First of all, this website is amazing the back ground everything, when you said that the rangoli is a dying form, for the last 20 years if you really look at it,it has been a dying form and not only is it used for weddings and competitions rongoli is really a form of sculpting and showing your creativity and how well you work with rice, painting and using your fingers and hands

after reading this message I was overwhelmed because it had an extend to the festival and arts of our late ancestors. developing these skills children might have the potential to improve and re born the arts and festivals. It would also give students the ability to express they feelings towards arts.

  3. Rangoli is an indian culture that has been slipping away from the culture.I feel it is very sad that people commonly these days will mostly see them in Hindu weddings.Rangoli is a form of art used to express religion by using rice.Being a student of Vishnu Boys Hindu College i am proud of the amazing work the students did.

  4. Rangoli is a very spritual and holistic art picece, and over the years I have been really fascinated by this art,i have been watching pictures online and also viewed my relatives creating this fine art piece and so happened it had a Rangoli competetion at my school VBHC.
I took place in this activity and I have to addmit is was a challege to create such beautiful art work in such little time, but it was not impossible and I did it.
For being the frist time the school has ever done this,it was really enjoyable and I am very glad that VBHC is making an efort to bring back these activities.

Sir I wish to express my view on indian culture because I believe the indian culture is slipping away too fast and one of the reasons for that is the introduction of chutney music, which is a poor attempt to modernise indian culture.
It shows that the young people today don't know what real indian culture is.Suggestion maybe we should have more competitions like the one V.B.H.C. had with rangoli but in other areas of indian culture. This might help young people appreciate our culture more

  7. I think the same way as you ,rangoli is very beautiful and I admire it to my full extent.Rangoli is used to capture the attension of the gods when they come to partake of the offerings.Although it may be as beautiful as it seems it is offten harder than it looks ,I can say this because I was part of the group which created the surya rangoli,it also takes lots of time to be created. The reason for it being so hard is why the art is done mostly for hindu wedings.I am proud in the work which VBCH has done.
