The Art of Mehndi

The Art of Mehndi

During this period of  Heritage Month and as we approach Indian Arrival Day, the art of Mehndi will be displayed on the hands of many individuals throughout the country. This art form which uses the human body as its canvas is part of the East Indian tradition in beautifying the body for celebratory functions.

In Trinidad and Tobago there are some misconceptions about male using mehndi.

The purpose of mehndi is to beautify the body, primarily for a wedding(dulha/dulhin) or for other celebratory purposes. In this present time, we are also seeing the use of mehndi being used as a modern fashion/style.

Males also decorate their hands with mehndi for marriages and even create mehndi artwork on their bodies as temporary tattoos. In India, the UK and parts of America it is not uncommon to see males keeping the tradition alive by donning their hands with this art work.

This is a beautiful art form which uses the henna paste to create different types of lines, in a repetitive manner, resulting in a splendor of motifs and patterns on the human body. Mehndi artists can be both male and female.

Today, I learnt in class that Mahndi is not only for ladies but for men. Mahndi could also be used as designs on cakes, candles, houses and cars. My teacher had also though me how to create different types of line designs. now I know Mahndi can be used for men and women, I can become a Mehndi artist and I can pass it on to my children.

Mehindi is also used in weddings and it means protecting the bride and groom from evil. These are not the only descriptions of mehindi, it also deals with different elements of design in art.

I think that mehendi is the most beautiful thing in the world when it is applied to the body. I think that we should not have lost the culture but I think I am going to spread the word and learn how to do mehendi to bring back this culture and keep it going.

  5. Being a Hindu, I have always been familiar with Mehndi especially when my mom and my aunts decorate their hands for weddings and ramayans. I have always been fascinated with it and all of the patterns that can be created from just a paste. To me seeing young people today showing off these designs much more makes me feel good to know our traditions are not dying.

Today in class Mr Dilip taught us how to make a mehndi design/pattern using motifs.I think it is fascinating because you repeat motif and you create a work of art that everyone you encounter will notice.I think it is important to inform persons that males should wear mehndi because their are a lot of people who follow their heritage but don't know of this.I will preserve this tridation by informing my family and anyone.

  11. It was a very interesting lesson about mehndi, at first I thought ''why are we doing this? isn't mehindi for females only?'' then I stumble on a shocker ! I was 'wrong'' , not only girls wear mehindi also men do! I payed full attention on what Mr.Dilip said and thought about it. It was a fun and interesting lesson I enjoyed it! The designs had different meaning like the sun worn by the groom , Sir said ''the groom wearing means he'll come in the house with all the energy of the sun'' I'll like to encourage men and children to learn this devine form of art

Today when Mr Dilip started teaching us the art of mehndi and also gave us some history. He taught us that mehndi is not only for women but men also. As followed in the post above there is some videos and pictures about for weddings men in India wear mehndi Abisheq Bachan and his father Amita Bachan. It was an enjoyable experience because sir bought us mehndi cones and gave us simple motifs to draw. At the end sir gave us a space to do our own mehndi pattern. In Trinidad and Tobago men refuse to put on mehndi for their weddings because, they say that it is only for women. I think that this is wrong our generation should bring back our culture. Thank you Mr Dilip for teaching us this wonderful topic.

I think that mehendi is the most beautiful thing in the world once it is applied to the body. I also think that losing the culture was very bad. I also think that to bring back the culture we should have professional mehendi artists teach this art in the community centers nationwide be cause mehendi is a culture we need to bring back.

  18. Today in class Mr. Dilip taught us the art of mehndi. He showed us how to make different designs and patterns using some of the basic steps involved with creating art using mehndi. I already had an idea about mehndi cause every Diwali my sister would always put mehndi on her hand and also on her wedding day. I don't see why in Trinidad and Tobago indians have stopped this tradition,if it was up to me to decide I would say bring this tradition back cause mehndi is really a very nice form of art.

The ladies in my family use mehndi especially around times if celebration like divali or weddings.Research I did shows that historically that mehndi was used as a symbol of good luck and some patterns were actuallybused to ward away evil. I look forward to trying this art.

  20. Today, I learnt about mahindi. I also learnt that mahindi is not just for women but for men when doing Hindu weddings. In doing mahindi there are many different line designs which creates beautiful patterns. The best part of the lesson was when our teacher gave us mahindi packets to try patterns on a blank piece of paper which was really fun and mind tasting when comes to the creation of the patterns.

In today's world only females wear mehindi but males do not wear mehindi. When we were doing the mehindi art i class i was so excited to start this lesson, i thought it would have been easy but it was difficult. After a few trys i finally got the hang of it and it was really easy. When i was doing the mehindi design i noticed that all of it was just drawing but it consisted of small and large dots, lines and and it had texture. I was so shocked because i never thought all these dots and lines would make a beautiful picture. I am not to sure yet if i would want mehindi on my hand when i am married but i am thinking about it.

  24. The art of mehndi. This is a form of art that was left behind by the east indians, the hinna plant which is mostly associated with mehndi is mixed with other materials and packaged for the use of persons upon their skin ( mainly on hands). The mehndi paste can be used on both male and female genders mostly for celebrations. My honest reflections about this typic is that it is an amazing tool , that can be implemented to enhance the physical appearance on a person.

In this activity I have learned how to do mehndi and what it is made up of .Mehndi is made up of leaves called henna leaves and it is used in weddings or any hindu festival but in Trinidad men don't use mehndi . When they used mehndi on hands for women and men it is sign to remove evil for the couple but for my wedding I will wear it to continue the culture long ago and to remove evil from me.

  29. In the lesson of Mehindi,I learnt that it is not only for women but it is for men. Mehindi is a art form which both woman and men use to beautify themselves for Hindu festivals or wedding etc. I also learnt that Mehindi is made of a plant which is called the henna plant but when the East Indians were coming to Trinidad they forget to bring the henna plant. I'll try my best to continue the culture that was brought by my ancestor.

This lesson was really cool because 1. I learnt that Mehindi is not only for girls but it is also for boys. And 2. I learnt that Mehindi is just the repetition of lines.
At first I thought that this lesson would have been very hard and complicated until I learnt that you just have to keep on repeating different paterns over and over I really enjoyed this lesson it is one of my favorite lesson I have learnt so far.

I think that mehndi is a fun and interesting activity for me. Its fun for me because it includes drawings. Its interesting for me because i taught that only women wore mehndi but males also do.It includes the drawing of lines, circles etc. and that gives you the pattern. Mehndi is used to decorate and beautify the human body.

I think mehndi is a very creative activity and very fun but also very hard and popular around the world. Mehndi is a very complicated activity because it takes time to get familiar with different types of designs also it is just a matter of repetition of lines and I leart some history of the henna plant , how mehndi was not brought when the Indians came to Trinidad and how people thought that mehndi was only for girls. I now think that society misunderstoodhow mehindi works.

The art of mehndi is a very interesting, beautiful and unique art form. This art form is new to me but I felt an odd urge to try it myself when sir introduced it to the class. Before I got home that evening I bought a cone of mehndi and tried it out on a piece of paper it was a delightful experience. It is done to beautify the body and in many cases mehndi is done on both hands and feet for a hindu wedding ceremony. It can also be used for other celebrations such as Divali. The mehndi design can be of various patterns and sizes.

  38. Mehindi is a fun, creative and a messy activity. I find it is fun and creative because you are displaying your art/vision on somebody, just like a tattoo, but it can come off afterwards. If you are not careful, it can be messy by staining your hands and distorting your art. Mehindi is mostly displayed by females on any Indian functions and only seen on males in Hindu marriage. Mehindi was one of my most favorite arts I did this term.

  41. I personally think that mehndi is an interesting activity. As a boy i thought that only women wore mehndi but when Mr. Dilip told us about it i was surprised. It is fun because it has to do with drawings of lines circles and lots more. When you put them together you will get a beautiful image. Mehndi is used mostly for weddings to decorate both male and females' hands.

  43. At first I did not like this topic at all because what I do is I plan out something on paper first and then I do it. But after that I planned out the design that I wanted to do and then outlined it on the paper but this is just for practice I would never actually draw a design on someone's hand. Now that I think of all the progress that I have made with the mehindi and how beautiful it is to me it is the best Indian art form that sir could teach us.

I thought that mehndi was only for woman but not for males but then Mr. Dilip Maharaj said that males were able to use mehndi as well but I did not believe him. But then he said that some famous males around the world used to use mehndi. It was very hard to do because it takes up a lot of time. But I never liked it because it was very hard to do.
